Gum Disease  (Periodontal Disease) Treatment

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Smile Sanctuary is dedicated to promoting optimal oral health and preventing periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. This prevalent condition is characterized by inflammation and infection of the gums and the supporting bone structure of the teeth.

The primary cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. However, several other factors can increase the risk of developing this condition:

  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth.
  • Smoking or Tobacco Use: Tobacco products can hinder the normal function of gum tissue cells, making the mouth more vulnerable to infections.
  • Genetics: Some individuals may be more susceptible to gum disease.
  • Hormonal Changes: Changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause can make gums more reactive to bacteria.
  • Chronic Illnesses: Conditions such as diabetes and heart disease may affect the body's ability to fight infection, increasing the risk and severity of gum disease.
  • Medications: Some drugs can reduce saliva flow, affecting oral health.

Gum disease can manifest in various ways, and recognizing the signs and symptoms early can be crucial for effective treatment. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Bad Breath: Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may indicate gum disease.
  • Bleeding Gums: Gums that bleed during and after brushing or flossing.
  • Swollen, Red or Purple Gums: Gums may appear red, swollen, or tender to the touch.
  • Gum Recession: the gum level shifts away from the neck of the tooth exposing the tooth's root.
  • Loose Teeth: in the severe forms of gum disease the supporting bone is destroyed, teeth may become loose or shift.

Gum Disease Treatment at Smile Sanctuary

1. Early Detection

At Smile Sanctuary, all new patients undergo a gum assessment during their first check-up and clean. From there patients will be informed if intervention is required.

2. Consultation and consent

At your first gum disease treatment appointment we will take you through the treatment plan and process, bespoke to your requirements, including a perio-pack which includes everything you need for optimal oral health home care. A consent form is also signed to ensure you are aligned on the treatment process.

3. Non-surgical periodontal therapy

Gum cleaning is completed and this can be done between 1-4 appointments dependent on the severity of gum disease.

4. Refinement appointment

We use this appointment to observe healing and make any cleaning refinements to better assist the healing process.

5. Evaluation

This appointment is the 12-week evaluation that assess the effectiveness of the non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. At Smile Sanctuary, we look for signs like bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gums that are swollen or receding, or teeth that feel loose.

If caught early (gingivitis stage), gum disease can often be reversed with proper cleaning and care. Once it progresses into bone-loss stages (periodontitis), the goal is to stabilise the condition and protect your smile long-term.

You’ll begin with a full assessment to understand your gums’ condition. We’ll then agree on a treatment plan, including non-surgical cleaning over one to four appointments, a refinement session to monitor healing, and a 12-week follow-up to evaluate progress before moving into maintenance.

That depends on how advanced the disease is. Some patients may need only one session of non-surgical treatment; others might need up to four before the evaluation review at 12 weeks. From there, you may continue in our maintenance programme.

Treatment at Smile Sanctuary for gum disease starts from AUD $1499, with weekly payment plans available. The practice accepts all major health funds — we’ll check your cover when you book.

No. The core of the treatment is non-surgical cleaning below the gum-line. It’s designed to be as comfortable as possible, with careful attention to your comfort throughout. Surgery is only considered if absolutely necessary.

After the initial phase and the 12-week review, if your gums are stable we’ll shift you into a supportive periodontal-maintenance programme. This means regular check-ups and cleaning to keep your gums healthy and prevent recurrence.

Yes — things like smoking or tobacco use, certain medications, hormone changes (e.g., pregnancy), diabetes or other chronic illnesses all raise your risk of gum disease and may affect how quickly you heal.
